James Whitcomb Riley. 1853–1916

10. "When the Frost is on the Punkin"

WHEN the frost is on the punkin and the fodder's in the shock,
And you hear the kyouck and gobble of the struttin' turkey-cock,
And the clackin' of the guineys, and the cluckin' of the hens,
And the rooster's hallylooyer as he tiptoes on the fence;
O, it's then the time a feller is a-feelin' at his best, 5
With the risin' sun to greet him from a night of peaceful rest,
As he leaves the house, bareheaded, and goes out to feed the stock,
When the frost is on the punkin and the fodder's in the shock.

They's something kindo' harty-like about the atmusfere
When the heat of summer's over and the coolin' fall is here— 10
Of course we miss the flowers, and the blossoms on the trees,
And the mumble of the hummin'-birds and buzzin' of the bees;
But the air's so appetizin'; and the landscape through the haze
Of a crisp and sunny morning of the airly autumn days
Is a pictur' that no painter has the colorin' to mock— 15
When the frost is on the punkin and the fodder's in the shock.

The husky, rusty russel of the tossels of the corn,
And the raspin' of the tangled leaves as golden as the morn;
The stubble in the furries—kindo' lonesome-like, but still
A-preachin' sermuns to us of the barns they growed to fill; 20
The strawstack in the medder, and the reaper in the shed;
The hosses in theyr stalls below—the clover overhead!—
O, it sets my hart a-clickin' like the tickin' of a clock,
When the frost is on the punkin and the fodder's in the shock.

Then your apples all is gethered, and the ones a feller keeps 25
Is poured around the cellar-floor in red and yaller heaps;
And your cider-makin's over, and your wimmern-folks is through
With theyr mince and apple-butter, and theyr souse and sausage too!...
I don't know how to tell it—but ef such a thing could be
As the angels wantin' boardin', and they'd call around on me— 30
I'd want to 'commodate 'em—all the whole-indurin' flock—
When the frost is on the punkin and the fodder's in the shock.

Hi my name is Amie and I am a thrift store junkie....

I love thrift stores. I have not always held this opinion. When I was in high school I went to a couple looking for a Halloween costume. Yuck. They have come along way, baby. Around here thrift stores have become big business, we have at least 9 in a 15 mile radius.

Usually, I dress my daughter in dresses and skirts, just our preference, we like girly. However, yesterday was chilly, so I put L in some black velour pants to go to the park. They looked like high waters on her so off to the thrift store I went. I had been allowed 30 min by the husband while the kids slept, so I was on a mission to find black or purple play pants. I went thru the rack with no luck, stopped, prayed and went back thru and found a pair of the same velour black pants in her size, great condition. I did my little PRAISE JESUS dance! Then I looked around and found a pair of ugly pink house slippers a brand new American Living Plaid top and a Libby Lu jean jacket that was bedazzled in pink all for $6.30!!!

I love to shop with Jesus. Jesus truly cares about all the details of our lives. That’s how big my God is. I know some people may think it is silly and frivolous to call on the creator of heaven and earth to help you find a pair of yoga pants for your 5 yr old after all there are people dying of starvation in the world.

That’s how big He is, that’s how involved He wants to be. God listens to all the prayers. He has plans. He knows the plans He has for you. The plans He has for me. The plans He has for the starving, oppressed, war stricken, sin riddled lost. He can be there for all of us.

I'm back in the saddle again........

That little Gene Autrey tune lingered in my mind as we headed back to our studies this school year.
I enjoy the freedom of home schooling my children, although everyone home everyday can get tiring.
I am blessed to have a husband who works from home, allowing me at least once a week to escape to thrift, while the children nap.
I thought I would share one of the new things we use to school. I have young children K and 2nd grade, so we review quite a bit. The books of the Bible, counting 1-100, by 1’s, 2’s, 5’s and 10’s, the alphabet phonics, etc. My children learn by song very quickly, so I was happy to find all these subjects and more, set to music over at you tube. Here is one of our favorites http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ixMvFdeo-F0
I would be interested to hear your creative ideas.

Over at Ten little toes, Emily posted photo's of her baby and a mystery relative. The photo's look like it could be the same child, they look very similar.
It reminded me of these two. Not as close as Emily's pic's but they made me smile.
This my adopted son and my husband's mother.

Charming the Birds from the Trees: Week of July 18th...

I just love Emily over at http://charmingthebirdsfromthetrees.blogspot.com/
She hosts a "Commitment to Loveliness" periodically. Here are her rules "All you have to do is choose five things that you would like to work on or do during the week that will increase the loveliness in your life!"
Here's my list for the week:
1. Visit a Farmer's Market or Berry Patch.
2. Pedicure
3. Bake "Lemony crisps" recipe found on the side of Pillsbury Moist Supreme Lemon cake box.
4. Organize my clothing closet
5. Change seasonal decor from Patriotic Picnic to Breezy Beachy

Cooking Shows

Instead of purchasing homemaking video's, which are not in the budget at this time.
I started dvr-ing some of the chef's I enjoy over at Food Network.
It has been so fun! I really enjoy Sandra Lee. She has a new show called "Sandra's Money Saving Meals". It is amazing to see how easily a meal can be put together.
Other favorites include "Quick Fix Meals" and "Paula's Best Dishes".

Pictured above is a niffty little recipie for a rainbow cake found here http://familyfun.go.com/recipes/taste-a-rainbow-cupcakes-842128/
that I made on St. Patrick's Day.

Now, if I could just find a good beginner sewing program.........
